At Greener Pastures Ranching, one of our favourite winter feeding methods is bale grazing. We will set out and pull twine on all of our bales in the fall while the weather is still nice and the twines have not yet had a chance to freeze down to the bales. Throughout the season we will then leap frog across our bale field with a set of two temporary electric fences. We usually feed for three days at a time per paddock. Each time that we go to open the animals up to new bales we then proceed to put the next fence up. By feeding in this method we allow for good manure distribution and the ability to go without starting equipment for the most part in the winter. Snow shoes are one of our best friends!
